MINISTER WISHES DIAMONDS SUCCESS IN SINGAPORE

Minister for Sport Mark Arbib today wished the members of the Australia Diamonds netball team success in the 2011 World Netball Championships as they leave for Singapore.

Senator Arbib, who last month joined the team as it was officially named at the Lodge, said our netballers would represent Australia proudly on the world stage.

“The Australian Netball Diamonds have a great record at the World Championships, winning nine of the 12 tournaments held, including the last championships in Auckland in 2007,” Senator Arbib said.

“I am sure the team will give their best efforts to make Singapore their 10th title under new captain Natalie von Bertouch.

“As the two tests against New Zealand earlier this month showed, the World Championships will be tightly contested.

“Australia won the first game and New Zealand the second so I’m sure both teams will be giving their best at the World Championships.

“More than two million people tuned in to watch the Commonwealth Games final between two teams, so I’m sure there will be huge interest in and support for the Diamonds’ campaign in Singapore.”

Australia is in Pool A in the tournament with Sri Lanka, Northern Island and Samoa. Our first game is against Samoa on Monday, July 4.

Senator Arbib said the Government was a strong supporter of netball at both the high performance level and by encouraging more young netballers to participate at the grassroots level.

“The Australian Government has committed $1.4 million to help our best players train and perform at the elite level.

“The Government also boosted participation funding to netball with $700,000 in new funding for Netball Australia to ensure we get more players involved in the game.

“Netball is one of the biggest participation sports for girls and young women with about 225,000 Australian girls participating in the sport in 2009.”

In total the Australian Government provides almost $4 million in annual funding to Netball Australia.
