MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS

The Hon. Kevin Rudd MP

AUSTRALIA TO PARTICIPATE IN YEOSU EXPO

Australia will participate in the 2012 International Exposition (Expo) to be held in Yeosu, Republic of Korea, from 12 May to 12 August 2012.

The theme of the Yeosu Expo, “The Living Ocean and the Coast: Diversity of Resources and Sustainable Activities,” is particularly relevant to Australia. Australia has long demonstrated its expertise and leadership in the sustainable use and preservation of the marine environment.

Foreign Affairs Minister Kevin Rudd said Australia’s decision to participate in the Expo reflects the strong institutional and people-to-people links between Australia and the Republic of Korea.

“This year marks the 50th Anniversary of diplomatic relations between Australia and the Republic of Korea, and Australia’s participation in the Expo is fitting recognition of the relationship,” Mr Rudd said.

“The Yeosu Expo will showcase Australia’s industries and cutting edge science and research in the marine environment providing trade and economic opportunities. It will also boost Australia’s tourism sector.”

The Government will provide funding of up to $10 million for the pavilion. As of June 2011, 96 countries, including China, Japan, India and France, and eight international organisations have officially confirmed their participation in the Expo.
