(Statement by the Acting Minister for Supply, I:ir. Allen Fairhall)

The Leronsutioal Research Laboratories (1:IIL) of the Department

of Supply, one of Australia's defence science establishments, will open

its gates to the public for three days in April - May.

The Acting Minister for Supply, L r. Allen I'airhall, said this

in Newcastle: today (January 21).

I;'J r. Fairhall said: " M will organise Open Days from April 30

to Lay 2, 1969.

"As it is 10 years since the laboratories were last shown

to the general public, these Open Days will provide a unique opportunity

to observe the development of new techniques and equipment.

"Displays will illustrate some of the major contributions Yhich

1URL has made to Australian defence projects.

"ibchibits will include the Ikara anti-submarine guided weapon

system, assessment of safe life of aircraft structures, tests on h;irage

aircraft, wind tunnel displays, new engine intakes and development of

new materials for aircraft."

JtL, at Fishermen's Bond, Melbourne, is engaged in scientific

research in support of defence projects for the cervices, and projects

for the Department of Civil Aviation and the Department of National

Development.

The establishment employs 576 people, includin; 186 professional

officers.
