(Statement by the i.a.nister for Supply, Senator Ken Anderson)

The largest solid-fuel motor yet used at Woomera was fired today

(Oct. 1) in a rocket called "Falstaff" as part of a joint British-Australian hypersonic and rocket research pro gr am.

The l.anister for Supply, Senator Ken Anderson, said this in

Sydney today.

Senator Anderson said "The motor was t:iree feet in diameter and

contained 9 ,000 lb. of fuel which burnt in 30 seconds.

"The motor, developed by the Rocket Propulsion Establishment,

was the largest yet developed in Britain.

"The rocket was launched from a monorail launcher designed in

.=astralia and completed recently at Woomera by my -Department's Weapons

Research ^stablishziont."

"Falstaff " , desizned by the Royal Aircraft L stablisluient in

Britain, reacted Each 5 (five times the speed of sound) and carried

equipmamt to measure vibration and temperature.

An early assesment indicated that the firing, was successful and

that useful research data were obtained.

This assessment was based on data recorded at the ;+oon , era Range

from the three telemetry systems carried by alstaff'', a d on Range

tracking instrumentation.
