276 NEW JOBS FOR SOUTH AUSTRALIANS

More than 270 new jobs are being created in South Australia thanks to the Gillard and Rann Labor Governments.

The new jobs will stem from a $6.1 million Government investment in 11 South Australian companies. Funding is being provided through the South Australia Innovation and Investment Fund — A joint Federal and South Australian Government initiative.

Announcing the funding at one of the successful grant recipients, SMR Automotive, today, Commonwealth Innovation Minister Senator Kim Carr and South Australian Industry Minister Tom Koutsantonis highlighted the importance of manufacturing to the local economy.

“The South Australian economy took a hit in 2008 following closure of Mitsubishi at Tonsley Park. The Australian and State governments responded by establishing this $30 million Fund which will attract almost $143 million in further investment to the State,” Senator Carr said.

“The investment we are announcing today will help SMR Automotive diversify into medical device manufacturing, helping its business to thrive and generate 37 new jobs.”

Mr Koutsantonis said the fund provided local industry with the boost it needed to commit to expanding and developing operations.

“This funding round had a particular focus on projects in renewable energy sectors, and manufacturing and engineering industries

“It is heartening then to see the number of jobs generated in diverse industry sectors, from aquaculture to automotive to video game development and medical devices. It will create high-skill, high-value jobs in other industries rather than just automotive,” Mr Koutsantonis

said.

The $6.1 million government investment will leverage a total investment of about $22.5 million. A list of projects is attached.

In January this year, South Australian manufacturing took another hit when Kimberly-Clark announced it would restructure its South Australian operations, resulting in a possible loss of 200 jobs. The Federal and South Australian governments pledged their support by establishing the $17 million South East South Australia Innovation and Investment Fund.

Application details for this Fund will be announced shortly. To register your interest in the program phone AusIndustry on 13 28 46 or email hotline@ausindustry.gov.au.
