I1 1-MMIATE RELEASE

VICTORIAN GAINS PERMANENT COMMISSION

A young Navy Lieutenant, now serving his second term

in the Vietnam theatre, has become the first seaman officer

under the RAN's supplementary list scheme to gain a permanent

commission.

He is Lieutenant J.L. Raleigh, 26, formerly of Timboon

Victoria, who joined the RAN as a midshipman (supplementary

list) in March, 1965.

Under the supplementary list plan which was started in

1964, seven-year short service commissions are offered, with the

opportunity to transfer to the general list on a permanent

commission on attaining the rank of Lieutenant.

Lieutenant Raleigh is at present serving in Th S PERTH

off Vietnam. He was also aboard PERTH on her previous tour

of duty in Vietnam.
