AUSTR ALI A ON DISPLAY AT THE LAE AGRICULTURAL SHOW

(Statement by the Minister for External Territories, the Hon. C.E. Barnes, Ivl.P.)

An exhibit outlining aspects of Australia's economic development would be one of the features of the Lae Show, the Minister for External Territories, I•,r Barnes said today.

The show will be held at Lae, I,:orohe District, from 15-18 October.

I^r Barnes said the purpose of the exhibit - the eleventh of its kind to be mounted in the Territory - was to show the people of the Territory how overseas investment had helped Australia develop and how in turn overseas capital could accelerate the development of Papua and New Guinea.

Photographic enlargements in colour and black-and-white, and films would illustrate the main developments. A model of a new township at Gove Bauxite project, Northern Australia, would be on display to show the growth of modern

townships around large mining projects.

Like Australia, Papua and New Guinea needed overseas capital to develop its own industries. Development brought in its wake new skills uid t3chniques.

Mr Barnes said the exhibit was part of a continuing programme to inform Papuans and New Guineans about Australia and Australians. Other methods employed by the Department of External Territories to assist this programme were the product-

ion and distribution of films and publications about Australia and its people.

A newspaper 'Australian Government News' had a circulation of 62,000 in the Territory.

The exhibit is constructed of Australian timbers. Samples of Australian minerals, woollen and agricultural products will be on display.

Officers from the Territory Administration and the Department of External Territories will staff the exhibit.
