PAY RISES FOR ROYAL PAPUA AND NEW GUINEA

CONSTABULARY AND PACIFIC ISLANDERS OF THE DEFENCE SERVICES

(Joint Statement by the Minister for Defence, the Hon. Malcolm Fraser, M.P., and the TMIinister for External Territories, the Hon. C.E. Barnes, M.P.)

New rates of salary for local members of the Royal Papua and New Guinea Constabulary and Pacific Islanders of the Defence Services have been approved.

Announcing this today the Minister for Defence, Mr. Fraser, and the Minister for External Territories, Mr. Barnes, said that the new rates which would be effective from 25 June, 1970, are a flow-on

of the recent increases granted to local members of the Public Service.

Details of the rises will be released shortly.

The Ministers said that a review was being made of the remuneration applicable to members of the Constabulary and Pacific Islander members of the Defence Services. This review would examine the suitability of the present pay structures to ensure that the remuneration provided adequate recognition of training undertaken and the skills and responsibility exercised at all levels.

It was expected that the review would be completed at an early date.
