DILLINGHAM GINS HIGHLANDS HIGHWAYS CONTRACT

(Statement by the Minister for External Territories, the Hon. C. E. Barnes)

The Minister for External Territories, Mr. Barnes, announced today that the Dillingham Corporation Ltd. had been awarded a contract valued at about $13 million for road projects on the South Wahgi and Southern Highlands highways in Papua and New Guinea. The sections of these roads are from Kundiawa to Minj, Kudjip to Mt. Hagen, Mt. Hagen to Togoba and Kaupena to Assissi.

The roads when completed would facilitate access to and within the central highlands, reducing road maintenance and freight costs to this large, fertile and populous area of growing economic importance. The provision of these roads would also encourage the political and social cohesion of a country divided by geographical and language barriers.

Mr Barnes said that the World Bank and its affiliate, the International Development Association (IDA), were each providing $U.S.4.5 million ($A4 million) towards the cost of road

projects in the Territory.
