FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Canberra Teacher Education Scholarshijjs

The Commonwealth Minister for Education and Science, the Hon. Nigel Bowen, Q.C., M.P., today announced that applications were now being sought throughout the Commonwealth for Teacher Education scholarships tenable at the Canberra College of Advanced Education in 1971.

The College will be offering in 1971 a three year course for pre-school and primary teachers, a four year course for secondary teachers, and a one year post-graduate course.

Students who hold the qualifications required by the College and who are permanent residents of Australia are eligible to apply. The closing date for applications is 31 October 1970.

Mr Bowen said that the establishment of these scholarships, for an initial period of five years, was a further measure on the part of the Commonwealth Government to meet the demand for trained teachers.

A sum of $50,000 has been included in the 1970/71 Budget to cover these scholarships,

The scholarships will be awarded without any bond for service to any employer. The recipients will be free to decide at the conclusion of the course where they will teach and whether they will teach in government or non-government schools,

Mr Bowen said that the scholarships would provide, in addition to payment of fees and assistance with travel costs to Canberra, a living allowance at the same rate as for Commonwealth University or Advanced Education scholarships. The living allowance will be subject to a means test.

9 October 1970.
