A.C.T. GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS - SECOND TERM ARRANGEMENTS

The Department of Education and Science announced today that it anticipates an additional 700 children will attend government schools in the A.C.T. when they re-open for second term next Tuesday. The additional enrolments will be mainly new children commencing in the kindergarten classes. Total enrolments at government primary and secondary schools are expected to total 25,000 at the beginning of second term.

A new primary school at Scullin will commence on Tuesday where enrolments from the suburbs of Higgins and Scullin will be accepted for both primary and infants depart-ments. Between 400 and 450 children from Scullin and Higgins

including those who have been attending Cook, Macquarie and Page Primary Schools will be enrolled at the Scullin School. A small number of Higgins children have elected to remain at Cook and Macquarie Schools until the Higgins Primary School

is occupied at the beginning of the 1971 school year. Bus transport will be provided for children from Higgins attending Scullin, Cook and Macquarie Schools.

Work on the provision of playing fields adjacent to the Scullin Primary School is nearing completion. A contract to landscape the area immediately surrounding the new school will be let as soon as the school building contractor has left the site.

The Department stated that the Waramanga Primary School, the first school to serve the Weston Creek District, will not be ready for occupation until well into second term. A specific date had not yet been set for its initial occup-

ation. In the meantime, pupils from the Weston Creek area will continue to be accommodated in their own school organisation at Farrer Primary School.
