“AMEC supports the Woomera coexistence model for mining and defence pending further detail”

"The Association of Mining and Exploration Companies (AMEC) supports the Federal Government’s coexistence model for mining and defence activities in the Woomera Prohibited Area (WPA) pending further detail” said Simon Bennison, AMEC Chief Executive.

“The coexistence model, if administered correctly, will deliver much needed clarity and certainty for business investment and decision making in South Australia. As acknowledged by South Australian Premier Mike Rann, the mineral potential of the WPA is significant. The Federal Government’s decision to unlock this area for mineral exploration and the commitment of the South Australian Government to undertake a major geological survey is therefore congratulated” said Mr Bennison.

“Yesterday’s announcement has the potential to deliver real, long term benefits to all South Australians through significant investment opportunities, job creation, social dividends and generation of royalties and various taxes.”

“AMEC now calls on the Federal Government to take immediate action to establish the WPA Coordination Office, supporting Reference Group and Advisory Board to implement and oversee the new access framework. The drafting of legislation to support the changes will take time so it’s also important to start that process now”.

“It is disappointing that Government is favouring a cost recovery model for managing non-defence access to the WPA. Any cost recovery model must result in improved efficiencies and timeliness if it is to be accepted by industry”.

“Government must continue to consult the mining industry whilst details of the new arrangements emerge. As requested in our submission to the Hawke Review panel, AMEC now asks Government for membership on the WPA reference group to ensure explorers and miners have a unified voice in this process”.
