Senator Natasha Stott Despoja, the Australian Democrats' Youth Affairs Spokesperson, launches the Australian Democrats' 1997 Youth Poll in Adelaide today.


"Each year, the Australian Democrats canvas the views of young Australians on issues ranging from suicide, racism, employment and education to sex, drugs, and rock'n'roll. Results from the survey enable the Democrats to create 'youth-friendly' policies and ensure the voices of young Australians are heard," said Senator Stott Despoja.


In its survey of young Australians, Youth Poll 98 found that:

* 67% believe that it is time to move to a republic and 82% Want a referendum on the Republican is sue, while only 1 % want the head of a Republic to be appointed by the Prime Minister, and 72% would prefer a popular vote for our head of state;

* 65% think that Australians are racist, and 54% believe that the Prime Minister should apologise to the stolen generation;

* 63% of young people know another young person who has attempted or committed suicide;

* 48% have tried marijuana and 51 % believe that it should be legalised,

* 75% want to see condom machines in schools, and 91 % believe sex education shou ld be a school subject;

* 70% oppose censorship of the Internet;

* 86% believe education should be publicly funded, and 65% believe current levels of students assistance are inadequate;

* 73% oppose laws which ‘move on’ young people from public space; and

* 90% do not think that the Government is doing enough for the environment


"Youth Poll demonstrates the Australian Democrats are committed to giving young Australians a say all year round. The Democrats support all young Australians and we are determined to help empower a generation that has been abandoned by today's political leaders", concluded Senator Stott Despoja.
