How Income and Assets Reduce Payments

* Assets over the amount for maximum payment reduce the payment by $3 per fortnight for every $1,000 (single or couple combined).

* Hardship provisions may apply.

* Income over the amounts for maximum payment reduces the payment by 50 cents in the dollar (single), 25 cents in the dollar (each of a couple).

How Income and Assets Reduce Payments

* If income is equal to or less than $60 per fortnight, payment is not affected.

* For each dollar of income between $60 and $140 per fortnight, payment is reduced by 50 cents.

* For each dollar of income over $140 per fortnight, payment is reduced by 70 cents.

* Income reduces Special Benefit payments dollar for dollar.

* Special Benefit is a discretionary payment for people in financial hardship who are not eligible for any other payment. Special Benefit cannot exceed the relevant rate of Newstart or Youth Training Allowance. Special Benefit may be reduced when other assistance is received (such as free board or lodging).

* Partner Allowance for Special Benefit partners has the same rules as Special Benefit.

* Payment is reduced if your partner's fortnightly income is more than $496.

* Hardship provisions for assets test may apply.

* Youth Training Allowance (at home, or away from home) is also subject to parental income and assets tests. If parental tests apply, a minimum rate of $65.75 is payable.

Parenting Allowance

Parenting Allowance is made up of Basic Parenting Allowance and Additional Parenting Allowance.

If you get a pension, you can only get Basic Parenting Allowance.

If Your partner is a pensioner, a different income test from that shown below applies.

Basic Parenting Allowance

Basic Parenting Allowance is not assets tested and is not affected by your partner's income.

Compensation income

Compensation income, such as weekly worker's compensation payments, is assessed under a separate income test.

Each dollar of compensation income reduces the Social Security payment (pension or allowance) by a dollar. Age Pension and Family Payment are not affected by the compensation rules.

Lump sum compensation payments are also subject to special rules.
