Senator Aden Ridgeway Australian Democrats’ Senator for NSW Indigenous Affairs Spokesperson 19 December 2002 STATEMENT 02/620

The ATSIC Board of Commissioners

I congratulate the leadership team of the 5th ATSIC Board, Chair Geoff Clark and Deputy Chair, Ray Robinson on their election.

They and the rest of the Board will need to provide the necessary strong leadership during what will be a significant time for ATSIC, as the review of its operations is undertaken and various other legislative issues affecting Indigenous people will be considered.

The Board will be called upon to make critical and far-reaching decisions during this term and they must have the best interests of Indigenous Australians foremost in their minds when making these decisions.

I also repeat my call for the ATSIC Board of Commissioners to take steps to broaden their engagement with the Indigenous community and make sure young people are more involved in ATSIC processes.

I also call on all Australians to respect ATSIC as Australia’s principal democratically elected Indigenous organisation and its vision of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities freely exercising their legal, economic, social, cultural and political rights.
