Press Release Ref: 1469 Published: 16/3/2005 Title: Nairn Supports Nimmitabel Water Efficient Project

Federal Member for Eden-Monaro, Gary Nairn, has thrown his full support behind a project which aims to deliver significant annual savings in water usage across Nimmitabel through the Australian Government’s Australian Water Fund Communities Programme.

The residents of Nimmitabel have faced long periods of extreme water restrictions over a number of years and the project aims to deliver annual savings in water of approximately 8 per cent.

“The project titled Nimmitabel Water Efficiency/Reuse Program has been brought forward by the Cooma-Monaro Shire Council as a demonstration project and is an excellent example of a community taking responsibility for the sustainable management of their water resources,” Mr Nairn said.

“It is a worthwhile project that would greatly ease the burden on the town’s water resources and I have written to the relevant Ministers in support of this application and I will continue to advocate for this bid to be one of the successful demonstration projects currently under consideration.”

State and Territory Governments which have signed and are implementing the National Water Initiative will be eligible to make bids under the Australian Water Fund, as will local communities and private proponents.

The Australian Water Fund will invest a total of $2billion over 5 years to fund practical, on-the-ground water solutions through Water Smart Australia ($1.6 billion), Raising National Water Standards ($200 million), and Australian Water Fund Communities Programme ($200 million).
