11 May 2004

Applications are being called again for a funding programme that has already injected $177,000 into the region.

Round eight of the Small Business Enterprise Culture Programme will close on June 18.

Member for Wannon - David Hawker - welcomed the programme today, saying it was enormously helpful to small business managers.

“About a third of our workforce is employed by small business,” Mr. Hawker said.

“These small business operators, simply by improving their skills, can also help their local communities.

“This in turn leads to more jobs and a stronger economy.”

Mr. Hawker said grants ranged from $12,000 to $250,000 and were awarded through a competitive process.

He said preference went to applications with strong community support and long-term benefits to the community.

“Just recently, Southern Grampians Adult Education in Hamilton was awarded a $140,000 Federal Government grant to prepare local businesses for working with mining company Iluka as it develops in both Hamilton and near Balmoral,” Mr. Hawker said.

Eligible organisations include industry associations, business enterprise centres, women’s professional and business organisations, community groups and post-secondary educational institutions.

Applications close on June 18 and further information is available at the AusIndustry website at, by phoning AusIndustry on 13 28 46 or from Mr. Hawker’s Gray St Hamilton electorate office.
