$2 BILLION BOOST TO BRUCE HIGHWAY

Peter Lindsay MP has welcomed today’s $2 billion announcement by the Federal Government that will deliver a massive upgrade of the Bruce Highway from Brisbane to Cairns.

“Today’s announcement is a landmark achievement for North Queensland,” Mr Lindsay said.

“I have been working hard with the North Queensland Roads Alliance Group. I gave a commitment to the local community that I would get significant funding for the Bruce Highway and today I have delivered on that commitment,” he said.

“This funding is in addition to the $368 million of Australian taxpayers funds currently in Queensland’s bank account for upgrades and flood immunity between Townsville and Cairns,” Mr Lindsay said.

This $2 billion upgrade will deliver flood immunity, more overtaking lanes and improved intersections along the length of the Bruce Highway, while also upgrading the quality of the road.

“In particular, there is a focus on the Northern Bruce Highway, with the announcement of $800 million to be spent on upgrades in our region from 2009 with more investment to follow,” Mr Lindsay said.

Priorities for this new funding will include;

•Flood immunity to the standard recommended by the Queensland Government. Flood plains to be targeted are the Herbert, Burdekin, Tully, North Johnstone and Mulgrave Rivers. •The Cardwell Range crossing upgrade, •Rehabilitation of bridges, including the Burdekin River Bridge, •Increased overtaking lanes and passing opportunities, •Pavement upgrades and renewal, including widening and strengthening, and •Improved intersections and urban links.

“This builds on the projects currently being delivered between 2004-05 and 2008-09, including; $220 million improving the overall condition of the Bruce Highway between Townsville and Cairns, the Mt Low Parkway intersection, and $79 million for the Townsville Ring Road,” Mr Lindsay said.

“The Bruce Highway is the main artery connecting Townsville to the rest of the nation.

“The community, like the Coalition Government, expects these upgrades to be delivered on time and within budget. State Labor now has no excuse not to act immediately.”
