Steve Waugh retires

Australia is grateful for Steve Waugh's contribution to Australian cricket.

After 19 years in first class cricket, Steve will end his career with the traits that characterised his game intact - competitive, determined and tough.

As Captain, Steve led by example, an example that so often lifted the team's spirit when most needed. And of course, under his remarkable leadership, Australia has dominated world cricket.

However, it is not just Steve's devotion to the Baggy Green and his success as a cricketer that command respect and admiration.

"People are always more important than any game. I get pleasure out of both. Winning a Test match in India is pretty hard and that gives a bit of pleasure, but my involvement in charity gives me greater satisfaction," he said in 2002.

We wish Steve the very best. He is an inspiration to an entire generation of aspiring cricketers around the world.
