World Water Day: don’t kill off our wetlands

News that the South Australian Government has plans to cut water flows to wetlands underlines

the scale of water mismanagement throughout the Murray Darling Basin, according to Senator

Rachel Siewert.

“It is inconceivable that this action is being considered on the eve of World Water Day - the

Greens do not want to see wetlands killed off to support unsustainable land use practices,” said

Senator Siewert.

“These wetlands survived the Federation Droughts and the terrible dry years of the 1940s. Since

then we’ve seen decades of over allocation. Even now the Federal Government is stalling buying

out water licences from willing sellers, and waiting until other parts of the plan have been

developed. This is unacceptable,” said Senator Rachel Siewert.

“The Greens want to see this buyback commence immediately so that environmental flows can

be returned to the Murray Darling. Instead of stalling for time we don’t have, the Government

should be acting now.”

“If water isn’t delivered to some of our threatened wetlands soon, the ecological loss could be
