McMullan Agrees With Archbishop On Apology Bob McMullan - Shadow Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs

Media Statement - 8 June 2001

Anglican Archbishop-elect, the Rev Dr Peter Jensen's remarks calling on Prime Minister John Howard to apologise to Indigenous families that were separated is a very significant contribution to the debate surrounding the Stolen Generation, Shadow Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs, Bob McMullan, said today.

"I welcome the call by the new Anglican Archbishop-elect, the Rev Dr Peter Jensen, to the Prime Minister to apologise to the Stolen Generation," Mr McMullan said today.

"Dr Jensen joins a long list of Australians in calling for Mr Howard to 'examine his conscience' in relation to an apology to the Stolen Generation.

"Mr Howard's doesn't seem to realise that an apology is essential if we are to move any closer to a lasting Reconciliation between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Australians.

"Mr Howard has frustrated the process of Reconciliation by placing his hand on the pause button in relation to Reconciliation and refusing to apologise to the Stolen Generation.

"Mr Howard's refusal to apologise to the Stolen Generation continues the hurt and suffering caused by previous Governments.

"If a Howard Government will not apologise a Beazley Labor Government will do so in the first sitting week of a new Parliament," Mr McMullan. Authorised by Geoff Walsh, 19 National Circuit, Barton ACT 2600.
