SENATOR THE HON. CHRISTOPHER ELLISON

Minister for Justice and Customs

Senator for Western Australia

E155/01 18 July 2001

Ecstasy seizure at Perth domestic airport

A 26 year old Gold Coast man was arrested at the Perth domestic airport last night after he arrived on a flight from Sydney, the Minister for Justice and Customs Senator Ellison said today.

“Federal Police intercepted the man in the airport car park. A search of his luggage located a yellow stuffed toy inside birthday wrapping. Upon examination of this toy it is alleged that a total of 4,256 ecstasy tablets, weighing almost 1.4 kilograms, was found,” Senator Ellison said.

“That’s 4,256 ecstasy tablets that won’t be reaching the streets of Perth.”

The tablets have an approximate street value of $210,000.

Nathan John Skelton was arrested and charged with possession of a prohibited import and appeared in the Perth Court of Petty Sessions today. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 25 years imprisonment.

“This seizure, coupled with the massive drug seizure on the Gold Coast today, reflects the diversity of methods that drug syndicates are using to attempt to bring drugs into and around Australia.”

“It is important that the AFP, in cooperation with other law enforcement agencies remain flexible and responsive to these emerging smuggling methods.”

“It has been a great day for parents concerned about the effects of these so called designer drugs and a bad day for drug traffickers,” Senator Ellison said.

Skelton was remanded to reappear at the Perth Magistrates Court on the 1st August for mention. Bail was set at $100,000 and he was ordered to surrender his passport and report to police three times per week.

“These latest detections demonstrate that Commonwealth law enforcement agencies are maintaining their constant and ongoing fight against drugs in Australia as part of the Federal Government’s Tough on Drugs Strategy,” Senator Ellison said.
