Peter McGauran, MP Minister for the Arts and the Centenary of Federation - Federal Member for Gippsland

McGauran Gives Strong Commitment to Postal Services 22 October 2001

Federal Member for Gippsland, Peter McGauran, said rural and remote Australians, small business and consumers of postal services will again be the big winners under the Coalition Government's comprehensive policy, Delivering for the future.

"First and foremost, the Coalition will retain Australia Post in full public ownership and maintain its Community Service Obligation to provide the entire nation - especially those in rural and regional Australia - with a standard letter service at a uniform rate," Peter McGauran said.

The Nationals in Government have a strong track record on delivering improved and expanded postal services. All of the National's 1998 commitments in relation to postal services were met.

"The Coalition Government will build on our previous achievements through a range of new commitments designed to strengthen, extend and improve on our world standard postal services provided in Australia today," Peter McGauran said.

The extension of the Coalition's Rural Transaction Centre, and the Electronic Point of Sale program will mean at least 40,000 more country Australians will now be able to access face-to-face banking an billpaying services

"This comprehensive policy stands in stark contrast to the Labor Party which has indicated that it would impose a massive and totally uncosted burden of at least $160 million on Australia Post and its small business licensees. This would put at risk the future of one of Australia's most respected public institutions. The bottom line is - Labor cannot be trusted on postal policy -after all they closed 277 postal outlets when last in Government," Peter McGauran said.
