SPENCER GULF RESIDENTS GET THEIR SAY

Spencer Gulf residents will benefit from the first of two Federal Government trial Regional Forums , being held at the Middleback Theatre in Whyalla on 22 and 23 July, at which regional needs will be discussed with local communities.

The Minister for Regional Services, Territories and Local Government, Senator Ian Macdonald, attending and addressing the forum, said the Regional Forums Australia Program is an opportunity to improve the way the Federal Government interacts with regional communities and provides services to the region.

“I will also be bringing key decision makers in the Public Service to attend the forum, so it is an opportunity for those making and implementing policy from Canberra to see and hear local residents and leaders affected by such policies.”

“The forum is actually the second stage of the consultation process with a Regional Future brief having already been presented by a steering committee in the region,” Senator Macdonald said

The Spencer Gulf Area regional future brief covers the key issues affecting the Eyre Peninsula; the Upper Spencer Gulf; the Yorke Peninsula, Mid North and Flinders; and the Far North. The brief will form the basis of the discussion and future planning

“The final stage involves the regions moving to implement the priorities they have identified, and a formal response by the Federal Government to issues raised, within three months of the forum.

The forum is being attended by a large cross section of people, including community members, business people, local councillors and senior officials from various Federal and State government departments.

South Australian Minister for Primary Industries, Natural Resources and Regional Development, The Hon. Robert Kerin, MP, will also be attending the forum.

A second trial forum is to be held in the New England and North West New South Wales region, on the 15 th and 16 th of September.

“The geographic, economic and social situations are very different to those of the Spencer Gulf area, so the two trials will encounter a broad cross-section of the issues facing rural and regional Australia,” Senator Macdonald said.
