B2005/102 - Nearly $43,000 in Australian Government funding to boost security at Dunk Island Airport

Leader of The Nationals in the Senate, Ron Boswell, today welcomed $42,978.58 in funding from the Australian Government for the Dunk Island Airport to upgrade its security infrastructure. Senator Boswell said the Australian Government was determined to protect the security of Australia’s aviation industry through its $35 million Regional Airport Funding Program.

“That protection extends to the many people and businesses that use Dunk Island Airport every day of the year,” Senator Boswell said.

Dunk Island Airport became a security-controlled airport on 10 March 2005. It is one of 146 regional airports that are now required to have a transport security program approved by the Australian Government to strengthen aviation security around the country.

Senator Boswell said transport security programs were tailored to local conditions and this funding would help Dunk Island Airport increase and improve security measures, such as fencing and access control.

Basic security upgrades at Dunk Island Airport will include installing:

· additonal lighting; and · security signage.

“The Australian Government recognises the importance of aviation to regional communities such as Dunk Island,” he said.

The Australian Airports Association has worked closely with the Australian Government to negotiate the funding arrangements for Dunk Island Airport.
