NOT HAPPY, GEOFF. BALDWIN SLAMS QANTAS CUTS TO WILLIAMTOWN SERVICES

Federal Member for Paterson Bob Baldwin MP today slammed moves by QANTAS to cancel the 6.50am daily flight from Newcastle to Sydney.

Mr Baldwin said that QANTAS had a history of pouring resources into routes where new airlines started flying.

“To do this, they cannibalise other routes where QANTAS has no competition, such as the Williamtown to Sydney route,” Mr Baldwin said.

“The end result is reduced services to a good customer base.”

Mr Baldwin said that if the flight was not at capacity as QANTAS claimed, then a smaller plane could replace the 717.

“I was on the 6.50am 717 last week, and I estimate that it was carrying around 60 passengers, which would put it at about 60% capacity,” Mr Baldwin said.

“A DASH-8 could replace the 717 and provide the service that Newcastle airport commuters need.”

Mr Baldwin said he would try to organise meetings with Minister for Transport and Regional Development John Anderson and the Hunter Business Chamber in Canberra next week.

“I won’t accept that the 6.50am flight is finished. I will do whatever it takes to get this service reinstated.”
