FIRST STAGE OF CANBE PA T ,P lNAL OPENS

(Statement by the Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr. R. W. Swartz)

The first stage of Canberra Airport's new $400,000 passenger

terminal will open tomorrow. This was announced today by the Minister

for Civil Aviation, Mr. R. W. Swartz.

Mr. Swartz said that the airlines would transfer into the

new section and the old building would be demolished to make way for

the second stage of the new terminal. This was expected to be

completed in December, 1968.

Mr. Swartz added that when fully operational the new

terminal would provide more than four times the lounge space in the

old building.

A quick service buffet, a cocktail lounge and extra car

parking space would also be provided.

Mr. Swartz added that the new terminal would not only

overcome the overcrowding at Canberra Airport, but would add to the

prestige of the National Capital.

Canberra Airport, which last year handled more than

350,000 passengers; 15,500 aircraft movements, and 2,728 tons of

freight, was one of Australia's busiest.
