(Joint Statement by the Minister for Civil Aviation, Er. R.W. Swartz and the Minister for Externa? Territories, Mr. C.E. Barnes)

The runway at :'Tewak, on New Guinea's north coast, will

be resealed at a cost of $100,000.

This was announced today in a joint statement by the

Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr. R.W. Swartz and the Minister for

External Territories, Mr. C.E. Barnes.

The Ministers said the sealing of the runway would reduce

maintenance work required on the surface.

Wewak is a vital port in the internal airline network in

New Guinea and handles Fokker Friendship and DC3 aircraft.

The Ministers said the work was expected to be completed

before the end of the year.

Tewak last year handled more than 28,000 passengers.
