(Joint Statement by the Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr. R. W. Swartz and the Minister for External Territories, Hr. C.E. Barnes)

Qantas will begin a second weekly return service through

Port Moresby to the Par East it October.

The service will operate from Sydney through Port Moresby

to Hong Kong.

It will supplement the present flantas weekly return service

from Sydney through Port Moresby to Manila and Hong Kong.

The second service to be introduced on October 27, was

announced today by the Minister for Civil Aviation (Mr. R. W. Swartz)

and the Minister for External Territories (NO. C. E. Barnes) .

The announcement closely follows a visit to Pa pua -- New Guinea

by Mr. Swartz and the Director-General of Civil Aviation (Sir Donald Anderson).

The Ministers said the new service would leave S ydney on

Sunday mornings, returning from Hong Kong on Mondays. Its times of operation

at Sydney and Port Moresby would be similar to those of the present service,

which leaves Sydney every Thursday.

The Ministers said since Qantas reintroduced Port Moresby as

a stopping point in September last year there had been a consistent growth in

traffic to and from Manila and Hong Kong.

The new service, also to be operated by Boeing 707 aircraft,

would encourage a greater flow of international visitors to Papua-New Guinea.

International passengers flying through Port Moresby by Qantas

could stop over in the Territory.

However, Qantas would not carry domestic passengers between

Sydney and Port Moresby.
