Statement by the i.inister for Civil Aviation., The Hon. R.W.C. Swartz

Bankstown airport is to get a new 3,000 ft. sealed

run-way at a cost of about $300, 000.

Tho Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr. Swartz, announced

this today}

Mr. Swartz said that the new run-way would parallel

the existing east-west run-way and would be connected to

existing taxi-ways by sealed turn-outs.

The work, expected to be completed by the end of the

year, would cause minimum interference to flying.

Mr. Swartz said that the number of light aircraft and.

general aviation movements at Bankstown had more than double&

in the last four years.

In 1962 an estimated 100,000 movements were recorded.

Last year, however_., there were m!^re than 280, 000.

Mr. Swartz said that the new run-way was needed to enable

safe and speedy handling of these aircraft.
