LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION THE HON KIM C BEAZLEY MP

LIBS AND NATS CANNOT BE TRUSTED WITH YOUR TAKE-HOME PAY 24 August 2006

The Liberal and National parties are completely out of touch with Middle Australia and cannot be trusted with the take-home pay of working families.

When Queenslanders vote in the State Election and the next Federal Election, they should remember that Queensland’s Liberal and National Party MPs voted to slash their wages.

Those National and Liberal MPs ducked the chance to stand up for working Queensland families and rolled over for John Howard’s extreme workplace laws.

There is only one course of action that would convince working families that the National and Liberal Parties do not want to slash wages and destroy job security - and that is for John Howard to come to Queensland and declare he will repeal his extreme workplace rules.

I call on John Howard to come to Queensland and declare his war on working Australians is over. Anything less will be a betrayal of Queensland and Australian families.

Peter Beattie, Queensland Labor and Federal Labor know these work laws are creating American-style dog-eat-dog workplaces. Peter Beattie will protect Queensland teachers, nurses, police and other public servants from Mr Howard’s unAustralian work laws.

The Queensland Nats say they will do the same. They cannot be trusted. Queensland Nats rolled over for John Howard in the Australian Parliament on these extreme work laws and they’ll do the same in the Queensland Parliament. They’re Nats first, Queenslanders second.

Even if they could be trusted, what about every other worker not under the state’s protection?

Queenslanders have seen first hand what the Liberal and National Parties’ extreme work laws will do, with the Queensland Retail Traders and Shopkeepers

Association now encouraging employers to ditch award pay, annual leave, penalty rates and public holiday loadings.

The Association wants employers to take advantage of young people by requiring them to work short shifts - all of this made legal by John Howard’s extreme laws.

These are the real-life consequences of the fact the National and Liberal Parties have started a wages race to the bottom that even the best employers will be forced to enter.

The National and Liberal Parties cannot be trusted with your take-home pay.
