Press Release Ref: 834 Published: 22/10/2002 Title: Sutton Public School wins Anzac Day Award

Sutton Public School has been named the NSW winner of a competition that encourages schools to actively commemorate Anzac Day and Australia’s wartime heritage.

Federal Member for Eden-Monaro, Gary Nairn, jointly made the announcement today with the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Danna Vale.

“I congratulate the students and teachers at Sutton Public for such a great achievement,” Mr Nairn said.

“It reflects their outstanding effort to understand and commemorate Anzac Day.”

The awards are run by the History Teachers Association of Australia and are funded under the Federal Government’s Saluting Their Service commemorations program.

“The Anzac Day Schools’ Activities Awards are part of the Government’s commitment to encourage young Australians to better understand and discover the meaning of our wartime heritage,” Minister Vale said.

“Students at Sutton Public School began learning about Anzac Day in March by listening to stories and poems and watching videos about Anzac Day and Australians in war,” Mr Nairn said.

“The school held a special Anzac Day program where students were involved in a range of activities including being addressed by local ex-servicemen and women, viewing wartime memorabilia, constructing dioramas, listening to wartime music and making poppies.

“The students have also undertaken a range of follow on activities such as a tribute book, a scrapbook of the special Anzac Day activities and the planting of a memorial garden, he said.

As a State winner, the students will receive $500 for their school and a winner’s plaque.
