MEDIA RELEASE The Hon. Dr. Brendan Nelson, MP Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence

08 May 2001 PARLSEC 128/01

RAAF BASE POINT COOK TO REMAIN AN OPERATIONAL AIRFIELD

The future use of RAAF Base Point Cook is to be determined by a Steering Committee consisting of key stakeholders formed by the Commonwealth Government, Dr Brendan Nelson, Parliamentary Secretary announced today.

Dr Nelson chaired a forum this morning at Point Cook, with representatives from Federal, State and Local Government and members of heritage, environment, planning and infrastructure interests to discuss the establishment of the Steering Committee and develop its terms of reference.

"I am happy to confirm that the base will also continue as an operational airfield which is also the view of the Victorian Government," Dr Nelson said.

An independent chairperson will be appointed to the Committee in consultation with both the Commonwealth and Victorian Governments.

"I welcome the participation of the Victorian Government in this process and I am confident that a suitable chair of the Steering Committee will be appointed in the near future."

A Reference Group comprising of organisations and local community groups who use or have an interest in the facilities at Point Cook will be invited to give their responses.

"These local groups will have the chance to canvass community opinion on the long term use of the site, which will ensure that we have productive views and public acceptance." Dr Nelson said

"This can only be seen as a constructive opportunity for all users and interested groups to provide their views and plans for the future preservation of its historical significance, and the environment and history of Point Cook."

The expected time frame to develop these proposals will be two years.
