WWII 60th Anniversary

1st August 2005

Federal MP Julia Irwin said last week that 38 surviving World War II veterans and war widows in the Liverpool-Cabramatta electorate of Fowler would be issued with a medallion marking the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II.

“The contribution made by our veterans in the Second War which ended in August 1945 gave us the freedom we enjoy today,” Mrs Irwin said.

She said that Allied and British Commonwealth veterans widows and widowers resident in Australia would also be receiving the specially struck medallion.

“A commemorative observance of the anniversary of Victory in the Pacific will be held at Cabra Vale Park on Sunday 14 August between 10 and 11.30 am.

“Arranged by the combined ex-Services organisations in the Fowler electorate - Liverpool, Cabra Vale and Canley Heights - I hope the community comes out in strength to commemorate this special anniversary of VP Day which came some three months after the Victory in Europe,” Mrs Irwin said.

Mrs Irwin said about 1 million Australians served in World War II and almost 40,000 gave their lives.
