AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT TAKES ON FAMILY VIOLENCE IN BROKEN HILL

The Australian Government has selected the Far West Community Legal Centre to provide extra legal and support services to Indigenous Australians in the Broken Hill area who are victims of family violence.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Leader of The Nationals, Mark Vaile, and the Minister for Community Services and Member for Parkes, John Cobb, made the announcement in Broken Hill today.

"In the 2006-07 Budget, the Government announced that we would establish five new Family Violence Prevention Legal Services in regional and remote areas, bringing the total to 31 throughout Australia," Mr Vaile said.

"The new units will provide legal and support services to Indigenous Australians who are victims of family violence and sexual assault, or who are at immediate risk."

Mr Cobb said: "I am very pleased that the Far West Community Legal Centre has been chosen to deliver the service in our region. I know the centre will do an excellent job at providing advice and support to the victims of this terrible scourge.

"The Government is committed to taking on family violence and sexual assault in rural and remote communities across Australia, because every Australian has the right to be safe - including with our own families and in our own homes."

The new service is expected to start operating in the coming months, after its detailed funding arrangements are finalised.
