LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION

STATEMENT BY THE LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION THE HON SIMON CREAN MP

Waterfall Train Disaster

The loss of at least nine lives in the Waterfall train disaster in Sydney is yet another shocking human tragedy at the end of a horror month which has seen bushfires claim the lives of four Canberrans, and homes in four states.

My sincere condolences go to the many families whose loved ones have been killed or injured in this terrible accident. Their loss is yet another devastating blow to a nation which in recent months has seen far too much human suffering.

This tragedy will deeply affect millions of other Australians who, just like the victims of the train disaster, today climbed on a train or a bus to travel to work or simply go about their daily lives. Sadly, at least nine of their fellow commuters today will never make it home and it is a graphic demonstration of how sudden and terrible these incidents can be.

I also, once again, express my thanks and deepest admiration for the magnificent job of the emergency service workers.

Whether it is a bushfire or a train disaster, Australians know they can always count on their emergency services personnel to act quickly and professionally to save lives, assist the injured and give comfort and aid to everyone. They do a fantastic job in dreadful circumstances.
