Dated: 31 October 2006 Press Release Number: whllgpab Portfolio: Family & Community Services

Welfare to Work Must Be Withdrawn

In response to the Salvation Army's decision to pull out of the federal government's Welfare to Work scheme, Australian Democrat Deputy Leader Andrew Bartlett has called on the government to withdraw its Welfare to Work package.

"This package is clearly unworkable for the people who are charged with administering it and is causing harm to the clients of these organisations," Senator Bartlett said.

"The Salvation Army is an organisation with a long standing and well respected reputation of assisting people who are in need, and they are just the latest in a long line of community groups to express serious concerns about the unworkable nature of Welfare to Work.

"There is clearly an urgent need to revisit the scheme.

"This package should be withdrawn immediately and be re-drafted in close consultation with the agencies providing the services to welfare recipients," Senator Bartlett concluded.
