VETERANS AND WAR WIDOWS RECEIVE PENSION RISE

Veterans and war widows would be better off following the latest increases in veterans' pensions and allowances announced today by the Minister for Veterans' Affairs, Danna Vale.

Minister Vale said pension rates would rise in line with cost of living adjustments from 20 September 2003, with the benefits to flow through to pension payments from the Department of Veterans' Affairs payday on Thursday 2 October 2003.

"Veteran disability payments will increase by up to $9.80, with the Totally & Permanently Incapacitated (T&PI) rate rising to $762.60 per fortnight, an additional $254.80 for the year," Mrs Vale said.

"Maximum rate single service pensioners will receive up to an extra $325.00 a year as fortnightly pensions are increased to $452.80, while couples will have their pensions increased to $378.00 each, an additional $273.00 each for the year.

"War widows will also benefit from the increase, with their fortnightly pension rising $12.50 to $477.80," she said.

The Minister said the provision of compensation and income support pensions remained a fundamental part of Australia's repatriation system after more than eight decades of caring for veterans and their families.

"These increases reflect the Australian Government's continuing commitment to those who have served Australia in war and conflict," Mrs Vale said.

Details of the new pension rates are available from the Department of Veterans' Affairs on 133 254 or on the

Department's website at www.dva.gov.au.
