Outstanding scholars receive Endeavour Awards

9 January 2007

The Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, today announced that 343 high achieving scholars and professionals are the recipients of Endeavour Awards for 2007.

As part of the Australian Government’s $276 million Endeavour Programme, 289 outstanding awardees from around the world will travel to Australia, while 54 of Australia’s top scholars and professionals will travel to countries in the Asia-Pacific to enhance their skills and knowledge in their area of specialisation.

“The Endeavour Awards facilitate the sharing of knowledge, strengthen mutual understanding with the people of participating countries and build international linkages and networks,” Minister Bishop said.

“These awards promote collaboration while students are in Australia, and create enduring links that continue after they return home, resulting in strong relationships between individuals and institutions.”

The Endeavour Programme is an internationally competitive and merit-based scholarship programme that will provide over 9,000 scholarships over five years to 2011. The scholarships are a mix of postgraduate, undergraduate, vocational and technical education courses, and research and professional development awards. They are open to all fields of study.

From this year, the Endeavour Programme is part of Australian Scholarships, an Australian Government initiative that has doubled scholarships and professional development opportunities in the Asia Pacific region.

Minister Bishop also acknowledges the significant contribution made to the Endeavour Programme by the Hong Kong-based Cheung Kong Group. The Endeavour Australia Cheung Kong Scholarship Programme is jointly sponsored by the Australian Government and the Cheung Kong Group, with a total of $7.5 million pledged in matching funds over a five year period.
