PM's chaplains announcement - throwing good money after bad

11th Oct 07

Greens Education Spokesperson Senator Kerry Nettle today condemned the Prime Ministers further $50 million subsidy to employ school chaplains as throwing good money after bad.

"Schools are in desperate need of fully trained, qualified counsellors - not priests," Senator Nettle said.

"Schools are of course happy to get any support for extra staff from the federal government but given a choice 99% of schools would choose a counsellor over a chaplain.

"The programme is not working well. I have been receiving reports of the division that it has created in school communities with parents arguing over their favoured denomination.

"The best people to provide support to students are trained professionals - that is school counsellors.

"The PM's conservative agenda which equates godliness with moral values is driving this misuse of federal funds.

"The Green will not be supporting this extra funding and will be seeking to have the chaplaincy programme funds redirected into employing more school counsellors."
