Minister calls for rising interest in mercury

AFFA03/203M 25 September 2003

Australian Fisheries Minister, Senator Ian Macdonald, has called on those with an interest in investigating mercury contents in fish to apply to the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC).

Senator Macdonald said calls today from the East Coast Tuna Boat Owners' Association for the Australian Government to fund a study was a timely reminder of the services available to the industry.

"The FRDC manages about $26 million each year in fisheries research, and mercury in fish is obviously of great interest to everyone," Senator Macdonald said.

"The FRDC has funded hundreds of organisations with an interest in making the industry more sustainable, safe and profitable, and I'd urge anyone with ideas to make an application."
