Attorney-General The Hon Daryl Williams AM QC

10 February 2003

RETIREMENT OF JUSTICE GAUDRON Justice Mary Gaudron retires from the High Court of Australia today.

I would like to put on record my appreciation of her dedication and commitment over a long period to her duties within the Court and to the law.

As I pointed out at Justice Gaudron's swearing in on 6 February 1987, Justice Gaudron held many distinguished positions prior to her appointment to the High Court. Many times, she was a pioneer in those positions.

Justice Gaudron was the youngest person appointed as Deputy President of the Conciliation and Arbitration Commission, the first female QC in New South Wales ,the youngest appointed as Solicitor-General for New South Wales and the first woman member of the High Court.

As I forecast in 1987, the ability, assiduity and determination Justice Gaudron displayed in those positions has stood her in good stead during the last 16 years.

And I expect these qualities will remain invaluable as Justice Gaudron pursues her career outside the High Court.

On behalf of the Government, I thank Justice Gaudron for her contribution to the work of the High Court over the last 16 years and wish her all the best for the future.
