Labor's "Lockdown of suburbs" indicates a dangerous move to the right - Brown

26th Sep 05

Kim Beazley's plan to allow police lockdowns of Australian suburbs to discover suspect terrorists is a blatant attempt to outbid John Howard in cutting down fundamental freedoms in our country, Green Senator Bob Brown said today.

"This is Labor scrambling to outdo Howard in emulating George W Bush. It is dangerous politics," said Senator Brown.

Tomorrow's terror summit should have global warming and a bird flu pandemic at the top of its agenda, Green Senator Bob Brown said.

“While planning to meet the threat of violent terrorists can always be improved, the threat of a bird flu pandemic hitting Australia and the world has far worse implications in terms of potential death tolls, social dislocation and economic impact," Senator Brown said.

"Global warming is a huge threat to the whole world yet the Howard and Labor state governments are fomenting it," Senator Brown said.

Senator Brown said that Prime Minister Howard should explain to the summit how US peace campaigner Scott Parkin was arrested and deported on false accusations, untested by Australia's norms of legal procedure. Kim Beazley should explain why he endorsed this travesty of Australian justice.

Senator Brown will be available for comment.
