German Greens Surge Due To Environment and War - Brown

The surge to the Greens (8.5%) which has saved the SPD- Greens alliance in Germany’s elections is due to public alarm about the environment and about a US-led invasion of Iraq, Greens Senator Bob Brown said today.

“ The massive floods in Dresden and elsewhere plus the deliberated failure of the Earth Summit in Johannesburg have heightened public fear about global warming and future environmental degradation,” Senator Brown said.

Add to that the conservatives’ support for President Bush’s intention to invade Iraq and voters were going for the strongest positive option: the Greens.

“This is in parallel with public sentiment boosting support of the Greens in Australia”, Senator Brown said.

“We have congratulated our German colleagues”, he added.
