REITH’S SENSITIVITY EXPOSED

“Peter Reith’s defensive media release shows how sensitive he is becoming to the small business secto r’s GST backlash.

“Mr Reith knows that my comments on Radio Station 2HD were in reference to the Government’s multi-million dollar glossy propaganda campaign and had nought to do with small business GST education programs.

“His media release shows he is incapable of identifying the difference between Government propaganda and GST information and education literature.

“Sending expensive glossy pamphlets to households about the so-called ‘benefits’ of the GST does not help small firms cope with the financial and time burden of the GST. Mr Reith is having difficulty facing the truth — small business will bear a huge financial burden (less $200) both before and after the implementation of the GST.

“The voucher system ‘with discounts’ rubs salt into the small business GST wounds and will deliver one third of a billion dollars into the hands of big business. Large retailers will be best placed to offer the discounts the Treasurer talks about thus transferring $320 million of funds set aside for small business to big business. I call that hypocrisy!

“Mr Reith also likes to hang his hat on the immediate tax deduction for new expenditure on new plant and equipment but the change represents a mere timing difference for small firms.

“I have never suggested the Government should spend less assisting small firms in their efforts to implement the unfair GST. However, I have said that the Government’s $200 Christmas voucher will not come close to covering small business GST compliance and implementation costs”
