VISIT BY INDONESIAN FOREIGN MINISTER

I am pleased to welcome the visit to Australia of Indonesia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr Hassan Wirajuda, from 28 - 30 November. This will be his first official visit to Australia as Foreign Minister and the first visit to Australia by a Minister of Indonesia’s new government.

Australia and Indonesia share regional strategic and economic interests, and have strong bilateral links. Trade between our two countries reached record levels in the past financial year at $6.4 billion. People to people links are substantial. More Indonesian students study in Australia than students from any other country (more than 17,000). At any given time, 10,000 Australians are holidaying in Indonesia. Dr Wirajuda’s visit will reinforce the already close ties between our two nations.

I will meet Dr Wirajuda in Canberra on 28 November. He will also meet the Prime Minister and other Ministers in Canberra and Sydney on 28 and 29 November. We will discuss a wide range of bilateral, regional and international issues, including our joint efforts to combat people smuggling and the regional conference on transnational crime to be co-hosted by Indonesia and Australia early next year. I will host a dinner in Dr Wirajuda’s honour in Canberra on 28 November.

Dr Wirajuda will also take part in a seminar with academics from the Australian National University and meet Indonesian students studying at the university.
