Burrup submissions close - time for Campbell to act

Senator Siewert, 28th November 2006

The Greens have urged Environment Minister Ian Campbell to add the Burrup Peninsula to the National List as recommended by the Australian Heritage Council.

"Senator Campbell should have done this a month ago, but he didn't want to upset industry. Today is the deadline for new submissions - he should now grant protection to the Burrup without delay," Senator Siewert said.

"Woodside has finally acknowledged that the Burrup needs Federal protection, and although their proposed boundaries are unacceptable, I welcome their acknowledgement that the Federal Government needs to act."

"I renew my call for Senator Campbell to facilitate negotiations between the North West Shelf Joint Venturers and Woodside to enable Woodside to co-locate on the North West Shelf site so that development can go ahead without damaging rock art," Senator Siewert concluded.
