Labor Welcomes New Alliance To Tackle Salinity Kim Beazley - Leader of the Opposition

Media Statement - 15 May 2000

I congratulate the National Farmers' Federation and the Australian Conservation Foundation on the launch of their campaign 'Repairing the Land' and for the significant contribution to public debate that they have made today with their report.

These organisations have not always seen eye to eye, but they have come together to meet the challenge of salinity.

This report represents a significant contribution to the public debate about understanding the extent of the problems and identifying appropriate responses, and challenges both sides of the political divide to work towards a solution.

If nothing is done, regional communities will pay a heavy price.

We need a process that will be sustained from government to government and not dependent on the short term politics of the day.

I call upon the Prime Minister to provide a response to natural resources management which is far sighted, and which brings all interested parties together to ensure the long term sustainability of regional communities.

The Labor party would welcome a consensus approach to the issue of natural resource management, and is prepared to work with the Government to ensure a solution is sustainable.

Any process set in place must be independent of party politics, must be long term and not linked to short term gains from asset sales.
