Shotgun merger confirmed by Government member

“Science Minister Peter McGauran’s misrepresentation of the merger between James Cook University and the Australian Institute of Marine Science has been blown out of the water by the Liberal member for Herbert, Peter Lindsay”, Shadow Minister Kim Carr said today.

“During Question Time in the House today, Minister McGauran persisted with the fiction that the ‘affiliation’ was not in fact a merger.

“But his party colleague Peter Lindsay knows better.

“In a statement the local member for the area said that the:

”formal affiliation would encompass a substantial part of the AIMS’ and JCU’s existing activities but provide scope for some continued independent activities by AIMS researchers, thus allowing AIMS …”

“Contradicting the Minister again, Lindsay also revealed that the merger will include:

• Shared governance arrangements between JCU and AIMS;

• Joint formulation of strategic planning between the organisations;

• Substantially greater sharing of resources;

• Greater involvement of AIMS staff in teaching at JCU;

• First time AIMS access to Australian Research Council Funding;

• Greater involvement of JCU staff in AIMS research activities.

“Lindsay describes AIMS as having a relationship with JCU akin to that of a CRC under the new arrangements. CRC’s are short-lived entities. Is funding instability the future for this world-renowned public research agency?

“When will the Science Minster come clean and call this merger what it really is?

“A Trojan horse for dismantling Australia’s public research effort, and a blatant pre-emption of the Government’s review of CSIRO and other public research agencies”, Senator Carr said.
