ARRESTS IN FOUR STATES DISRUPT ORGANISED CRIME Ten people have been charged in four States as the result of an investigation into a suspected drug distribution syndicate.

The operation - co-ordinated by the National Crime Authority in partnership with Victoria and South Australian Police - represents a significant effort in tackling organised crime.

The overnight arrests in four States, Victoria, Queensland South Australia and New South Wales, resulted from several months of cooperative police work to counter drug distribution activities, suspected to be operating between South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales.

Inquiries are continuing and further charges may be laid against other people.

Late yesterday a vehicle was intercepted by police in outer Sydney where approximately 18.5 kilograms of cannabis was seized. It is believed the truck had travelled from Adelaide through Victoria.

Other items seized include small quantities of amphetamines, cocaine and ecstasy, documentation, 50 cannabis plants and just over ½ kilogram of cannabis in Victoria, cash and one vehicle.

Details of the ten people charged are as follows:

QUEENSLAND:

Man [69years] charged with possessing tainted property [cash] to appear at Southport Magistrates Court 24.8.00…extradition to Victoria to be sought

 

VICTORIA:

Man [59years] charged with cultivate, traffic and possess cannabis. Bailed to appear Melbourne Magistrates Court 27.9.00

Man [53years] charged with cultivating drug of dependence

Man [27years] charged with possess, traffic cannabis. Also charged with possession of cocaine and ecstasy and cash. Bailed to appear Melbourne Magistrates Court 23.10.00

Man [58years] charged with use, possess and traffic cannabis and conspiracy to traffic cannabis and possess cannabis. Bailed to appear Melbourne Magistrates Court 23.9.00

SOUTH AUSTRALIA:

Man [35years] charged with taking part in supply of prohibited substance

 

NEW SOUTH WALES:

Man [33years] charged with supplying prohibited drug. Bailed to appear Liverpool Local Court 11.9.00

Man [41years] charged with supplying prohibited drug. Bailed to appear at Liverpool Local Court 11.9.00

Man [34years] from SA, charged with supply and possess prohibited drug. To appear Liverpool Local Court 24.8.00

Man [43years] from SA, charged with supply and possess prohibited drug. To appear Liverpool Local Court 24.8.00

 

"This operation’s outcome delivers a successful conclusion to intelligence-driven police work and coordination across several

jurisdictions. It’s important to realise that this is not an easy process. These arrests are a solid example of a national approach to complex, organised crime," Senator Vanstone said.
